NBA Trade Rumors: The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly interested in trading for Derrick Rose, who becomes a free agent this summer

The New York Knicks are unlikely to move Carmelo Anthony ahead of this week’s NBA Trade Deadline, but they could move Derrick Rose.

According to ESPN’s, Ian Begley, the Minnesota Timberwolves have discussed potential deals with the Knicks for Rose.

Rose played his first seven seasons of his career for Wolves coach Tom Thibodeau during their tenures with the Chicago Bulls.

More from Sir Charles In Charge

"[via ESPN]The Minnesota Timberwolves have reached out to the New York Knicks recently to discuss potential trades for N.Y. point guard Derrick Rose, sources told ESPN.…It is unclear what Minnesota would offer in a potential trade for Rose. The Timberwolves, sources say, are among several teams to reach out to the Knicks asking about potential trades for Rose."

Rose will become an unrestricted free agent after this season, and will likely command big money on the open market. If nothing else, he’ll certainly be asking for it.

Assuming that the Knicks know they’re not willing to tie up that kind of money with Rose, it would be smart for them to pursue a trade for the former NBA MVP. As Begley stated in his report, it’s not yet clear what the Knicks are looking for in return.

Though, I would assume expiring contracts or young assets, or picks, would do the trick for the Knicks.

The Wolves have been long rumored to be in the market for a veteran point guard, and unloading Ricky Rubio would likely be the preference. However, I’m not sure where the Knicks stand on absorbing Rubio at the moment.

If the two teams are really determined to get a deal done, perhaps finding a third team for Rubio would be the preferred choice of action – assuming the Knicks don’t want to absorb salary, of course.
