NBA Rumors: Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid likely needs to undergo knee surgery; there has been no recovery timetable announced

Joel Embiid took the NBA by storm this season.

When healthy, I don’t think anyone would argue that he’s definitely one of the most talented bigs in the league. However, the problem is, through his first three years in the league he will only have logged 31 games.

Embiid’s first two years of his career were plagued by foot injuries which required two separate surgical procedures. Now, it appears that he’ll have to go under the knife for a knee issue.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, Embiid “very likely” will have to get surgery on his injured knee soon. Embiid injured his knee in January, and was diagnosed with a partially torn meniscus and bone bruise. The Philadelphia 76ers have given no (public) recovery timetable since.

"[via ESPN]Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, ruled out for the rest of the season because of a knee injury, is “very likely” headed for surgery in the coming days, according to league sources.Sources told ESPN.com that Embiid and the Sixers have been exploring treatment options after he suffered a partially torn meniscus and bone bruise in his left knee Jan. 20 against Portland.A recovery timetable won’t be established, sources said, until after the procedure."

Before his knee injury, Embiid was averaging 20 points, nearly eight rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. There’s still a good chance he ends up winning the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award, too.

However, no matter how you dice it up, the fact that Embiid needs ANOTHER surgery isn’t good.

The good news, of course, is that this isn’t a ligament issue for Embiid. Still, another injury has to be demoralizing for both Embiid and the Sixers.

Hopefully, Embiid is able to return to the team before next year’s training camp. Another lost summer is the last thing a young player like Embiid needs.
