Boston Celtics?

Although the Celtics were in talks with the Pacers at the deadline, George ultimately wasn’t sent to Beantown. Larry Bird was content on holding onto his franchise cornerstone, even though the presumed number one overall pick would’ve been his if he let George go.

The Celtics have sole possession of the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. They can win it all this year and are undoubtedly in win-now mode. They have no reason to add a rookie. When no trade was made for George, fans and media alike questioned Celtics GM Danny Ainge for not making the move.

However, Ainge can still deal the pick. The top prospects are point guards, and having all-star Isaiah Thomas at point already gives the Celtics absolutely no reason to draft another. They could trade the pick and possibly a smaller piece for George, a proven superstar, on or before draft night.

After all, what position could the Celtics possibly improve upon by keeping the pick rather than trading for George? Taking Markelle Fultz or Lonzo Ball wouldn’t make any sense with IT4 in town. If they don’t win the title this year, adding George would certainly improve their odds next season and maybe beyond if he negotiates a new contract beyond the 2017-18 season.
