When was the last time the San Antonio Spurs faced the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA Playoffs?

In the history of the NBA, we’ve seen teams from the same conference meet each other. Some teams seem to meet each year and other teams see each other barely. In this “Last time they met” series, we’re going to look at the current NBA playoff matchups and review the last time these two teams met in the playoffs.

Today, we’ll look at the 2nd seeded San Antonio Spurs and the 7th seeded Memphis Grizzlies. If you look at the entire history of the teams in the playoffs, the Spurs have been dominant, sweeping three of the four matchups. But, the Grizzlies did win one series.

But, in terms of the last series, the Spurs won 4-0 against the Grizzlies in 2016. Yes, they just met in last year’s playoffs, so this is fresh in all of the minds and, it’s going to be easy to get a sense of a preview for this upcoming series.

Oh, and by the way, 2016’s series matchup was the same seeding: Spurs 2nd and Grizzlies 7th. Everybody wants to talk about the Cavaliers and Warriors but this is more impressive. Will we get the same result as last year? That remains to be seen.

So, anyway, the Spurs won in a sweep last year. It was kind of expected, if only because the Grizzlies were actually struggling with injuries to their roster. They limped their way into the playoffs and simply couldn’t handle the merciless Spurs.

No, really, the Spurs decimated the already decimated Grizzlies. They won the first game by 32 points. It was a sign of things to come. Next game, they won by 26 points. Oh dear. But then, the series shifted to Memphis and the Grizzlies found new life.

They lost by only 9 points in game 3. But then, the Spurs came back and won by 21 points to finish the series.

Not much to talk about in this one. It wasn’t close. If the Grizzlies were healthy, would they have put up a better fight? Of course. One thing about those guys, they are not pushovers. However, it was hard to imagine the Spurs losing the series to them regardless.

Memphis is in a better position to break this current eight playoff game losing streak. I don’t see them winning the series though.
