NBA Rumors: Chicago Bulls point guard Rajon Rondo has been diagnosed with a broken thumb and will be out indefinitely

Up 2-0 in their first round playoff series against the Boston Celtics, the Chicago Bulls just got some devastating news.

The Bulls announced Friday that Rajon Rondo, the team’s starting point guard, will be out indefinitely with a broke thumb.

More from Sir Charles In Charge

"The Bulls said Rondo’s injury will not require surgery, but a source told ESPN’s Chris Haynes that the injury was “pretty serious” and his possible return depends on how long the Bulls’ can extend their postseason run."

According to Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg, Rondo suffered the injury during the third quarter of Game 2. He played through the injury, but won’t be able to play through it anymore. He will be re-evaluated in 7-10 days. He added that it was “too early to tell” if he could return in the playoffs.

Rondo has been a huge reason why the Bulls have raced off to a 2-0 lead in this series. During the two games, the lead guard is averaging 12 points, 10 assists, nearly nine rebounds and three steals per game. Specifically, in Game 2, Rondo finished with 11 points, 14 assists (a team playoff record), nine rebounds and five steals.

With Rondo now out, the question now officially shifts to whether or not Chicago has enough depth at the point guard position to get by Boston – the top seed in the East – for two more games.

In his absence, Cameron Payne will likely be active moving forward. Michael Carter-Williams will likely also see an uptick in minutes with Rondo sidelined. Or maybe we could see Dwyane Wade handle the ball a bit more in order to compensate for the loss of Rondo.

For the Bulls, though, I don’t think there’s any “one answer” for this loss. As strange as it may have seemed a couple months ago, the loss of Rondo could trigger the end of this cinderella run by the Chicago Bulls.
