Rajon Rondo’s broken thumb had a major impact in the outcome of Game 3 between the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls. Rondo’s injury may very well prolong Boston’s post-season run

After Games 1 and 2, the Chicago Bulls looked poise to, eventually, eliminate the Boston Celtics. Jimmy Butler was playing like a superstar, Dwyane Wade provided support and leadership, young Bobby Portis rose up to the occasion and, of course, Rajon Rondo ran the show to perfection.

Then, the injury bug hit the Bulls hard. Their veteran point guard suffered a broken thumb in Game 2. As a result, Rondo missed Game 3 in Chicago and is listed as out indefinitely due to the injury.

All of a sudden, the Boston Celtics found new life. They finally looked like a top-seeded team in Game 3. Their defense was outstanding, and limited the Bulls to 39.3 percent shooting from the field, 28.6 percent from deep and forced them into 17 turnovers.

As for their offense, Boston shot 47.7 percent from the field, 45.9 percent from deep and had a whopping 34 assists while only committing 12 turnovers.

Any observer might say that in this particular game, the Boston Celtics finally played the way they should. Yet, it was against a different Bulls team, one that didn’t have their floor leader out there running the show.

In fact, the Bulls, in Game 3, only had a grand total of 14 assists, a number that Rondo could easily get by himself in any given night – in the first two games of this series, Rondo was averaging 10 assists.

As ironic as it may seem, the guy that the Bulls wanted to get rid off since the second month of the season has turned out to be their most important piece in the playoffs.

Fine. Go ahead and say that he can’t shoot a lick or that he is such a hard player to deal with. Yet, no one could ever question that Rondo can ball especially during the big moments. He has proven that time and again. The guy’s basketball IQ is definitely up there. Most importantly, Rondo is a winner.

And yes, the Chicago Bulls badly need him. They are not the same team without him. For sure, the Bulls will lose this series without their floor general.

Throughout his career, Rajon Rondo always came up big for the Boston Celtics. In his stint there, he put on playoff performances that would forever be engraved in the minds of Celtics fans. Now, with his recent thumb injury, he may have probably saved the Boston Celtics once again, as he has done many times in the past.
