NBA Rumors: Dwyane Wade is reportedly leaving the option open for a return to the Miami Heat

There’s no question that the Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat divorce felt entirely preventable. It just didn’t make sense. If Wade was going to leave the Heat, why would he do it in the twilight of his career?

And if the Heat were going to move on from Wade, why would they do it in the fashion that they did – centered around a messy free agency dispute?

Miami is Dwyane Wade and Dwyane Wade is Miami. Even though Wade did “go home” he just didn’t look right in a Chicago Bulls uniform. Even after one entire season in Chicago, Wade still doesn’t “feel” like a Bull.

Interestingly, he has the opportunity to change it all this summer. Wade has a $24 million player option for the 2017-18 season. However, if he opts out of that money, he likely won’t even sniff a deal close to that number. And that makes things that much more complicated.

Though, this interesting nugget from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald could throw another wrench in this summer’s Wade saga that seems inevitable.

"[via Miami Herald]Wade has never bashed the Heat publicly and is open to considering a return at some point in his career, according to an associate."

While a return to Miami would make for an excellent story, I personally don’t think the timing is right for this to happen. Wade is coming off a season where he averaged 18.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He still feels like he can be an important part to any fringe championship contender.

By my guess, if Wade opts out of that huge second year with the Bulls, it’s likely to pursuit one final championship – with a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers or LA Clippers (if they remain intact).

Wade may eventually return to finish his career with the Heat, but the timing is off. At least right now.
