12. Detroit Pistons – Donovan Mitchell, G, Louisville
GM: Brady Rippon; Twitter: @bradyrippon
The Pistons don’t stop after picking up Tatum, jumping on Donovan Mitchell with their second lottery pick. While the main priority this offseason will be retaining Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the franchise must entertain the chance that he flees to greener pastures. Mitchell provides some insurance at an already thin position for Detroit.
While Mitchell struggled with his for a portion of his time at Louisville, he eventually rounded into a legitimate outside threat. However, the main draw for this pick is the defensive upside. Drafting a young player with potential on both ends provides a lineup flexibility that will prove to be especially valuable moving forward.
While the Pistons entertained offers for Drummond and Jackson, the core pieces stood pat through the draft. Both Mitchell and Tatum should thrive under Stan Van Gundy as Detroit makes a run at the East Playoffs. Detroit has improved their team while simultaneously decreasing their payroll. As Pistons GM, I give the Pistons a thoroughly unbiased A+ for their offseason efforts.
