9. Dallas Mavericks – Dennis Smith Jr., PG, NC State

Dennis Smith Jr. is one of the bigger boom or bust prospects in this draft. Because he did a lot of losing in college at NC State, mostly because the team was in disarray and didn’t have much talent besides Smith, many questioned his desire to be great.

However, he has excellent athleticism and a streaky jump shot. If he reaches his ceiling, he could end up being the best player in this draft. That’s a risk that the Mavs were willing to take.

Smith averaged 18 points and nearly five assists during his freshman season with the Wolfpack. He will now be asked to lead the Dallas Mavericks from opening tip. Tall task.
