NBA Free Agency: A starting 5 of the most overrated free agents
Derrick Rose, PG, Unrestricted
His story?
The story of Rose is a known by all basketball fans. The league’s youngest ever MVP, Rose was a supernova who burned early and burned brightly. However, with years of injury concerns affecting his explosiveness and his impact on the game.
How was his season?
Rose had a solid, yet unspectacular season with the Knicks. He showed offensive power and still averaged 18 points per game. Rose did not help himself by taking a voluntary absence before a match. Rose’s saving grace was looking like a season of full health, before injuring his knee in the late stages.
Why is he overrated?
Rose still carries the name and the MVP. However, his play has been nowhere near that for a while. Rose does not fit the current play in the NBA and having a point guard like Rose limits the style that his team can play.
It is unclear if Rose goes for a short-term deal and back himself to play his way to a better contract. If so then there will be suitors. However, if Rose wants safety in a multi-year deal then he is a huge gamble.
A gamble too large when you consider a fit Rose is a mediocre starting point guard these days. A high risk, moderate reward move doesn’t sound like its worth taking much of a flyer on.
