NBA Free Agency: 9 signings that make the most sense
Serge Ibaka
Ideal destination: Minnesota Timberwolves
Serge Ibaka is not the player he once was. He was a “unicorn” before the term was used. The shot-blocking and three-point shooting stud of the Thunder is no longer. If a team offers him such a large contract expecting that, they will be disappointed.
In the wake of his defense taking a step back, Ibaka’s offense has developed into his main attribute. Highlighted in his time at the Raptors. However, Ibaka did not turn into a terrible defender overnight. Those skills are still there, even if he is no longer in contention for defensive player of the year.
Karl Anthony-Towns may be a great defender one day. The young gun can do everything else at an elite level after all. However, odds are he can maybe become average at best. According to ESPN real plus/minus, KAT was the worst defensive center in the league.
Whilst Ibaka is not the defender he once was, he would offer some rim protection, and help the side on offense. A big man duo of Ibaka and Towns is terrifying on the offensive end of the floor.
