Philadelphia 76ers: Now’s the time to buy stock in The Process
Step 4 – Free Agency
Free agency. Philly already had an incredible summer without making moves of their own. Getting Embiid and Simmons healthier, while drafting Fultz is already a B+ offseason. Combine that with Jimmy Butler, Paul George, and Paul Millsap all running away from LeBron to the Western Conference and that B+ becomes an A-. The East is now a wide open playing field with endless possibilities at the sixth, seventh, and eighth playoff spot. But we’re not done.
The Sixers signed legendary sharp shooter J.J. Redick to a one year, $23 million dollar deal, and Amir Johnson to a 1 year, $11 million dollar deal. Both of these pick ups add much-needed veteran leadership to the locker room in Philly. I love Embiid, but you can’t have a 23-year-old class clown in charge of holding your team accountable. Both J.J. and Amir have tons of playoff game experience and have been a part of some very successful teams.
The Sixers needed to address their perimeter shooting woes. They were 25th in the league in three-point percentage and J.J. will spread the floor and boost that percentage through the roof. Last year Redick shot a hair shy of 43 percent from three on six attempts per game.
Last year, Robert Covington made the most three pointers on the team with 137. J.J. made a career high 201 threes last season, 94 more than RoCo.
Amir Johnson brings toughness and physicality to the four spot. With Dario Saric and Ben Simmons being a more finesse type face-up PF, the Sixers signing him was a perfect fit. More than anything, Amir will be a force to be reckoned with down low. You’ll think twice about driving inside the lane with him being in the right spots after rotating defensively. His defensive I.Q. is extremely high, and that comes with being a veteran leader. What he lacks in skill set and athleticism, he more than makes up for in experience and intelligence.
