The summer of 2019 is a different story.
That’s the year that Kawhi Leonard (keep dreaming), Klay Thompson (not completely nuts), and Jimmy Butler (bingo!) all become free agents. It’s also the year that Kristaps Porzingis is a due a ginormous raise, but with a cap hold of just over $7 million, the Knicks will be a Lance Thomas expiring contract dump away from max cap space. Crazier things have happened.
This all adds up to every Knick fan’s wet dream: a big 3 that actually has a chance of going all the way.
Wet dreams are lovely. New Yorkers have had many moments over the last 40-plus years where they were convinced those dreams were finally coming true. Patrick, Allan Houston, Starbury, Amare, Carmelo…many a changed bedsheet, but nary a ring in sight.
Kyrie would seem to represent the best hope yet.
Or not.
