NBA Rumors: Isaiah Thomas could end up missing the majority of the 2017-18 NBA season depending on how quickly he recovers from his hip injury

Barring an unforeseen event in the next couple of hours – or days – Isaiah Thomas, one way or another, will be a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers entering the 2017-18 NBA season. He was one of the bigger pieces involved in what will be remembered as the Kyrie Irving for Isaiah Thomas blockbuster swap between rivals.

Although, as he continues to recover from a hip injury, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe there’s a growing sense that he could miss the majority of the 2017-18 season. And that’s exactly what has the Cleveland Cavaliers thinking twice about finalizing the IT for Kyrie deal.

According to Lowe, depending on how quickly or slowly his recovery process continues, Thomas could end up missing the majority of the upcoming season.

That would be quite problematic for the Cavs, especially considering that they’re doing this deal with their biggest Eastern Conference threat.

Sending your second-best player in exchange for a player that could miss a big chunk of this season doesn’t seem ideal.

"[via ESPN]If recovery from various hip ailments, including a bone bruise, does not proceed smoothly, there is at least a slight chance Thomas would miss most of the 2017-18 season, sources say."

It should be noted that Thomas believes he’ll be the same player and that this hip injury will not slow him down this season. Although, that’s something you’d expect the player to say.

There is a huge gamble here for the Cavs. And if their doctors are telling them that he likely won’t play much this year, they have to think twice about going forward with this IT for Kyrie trade.

Cleveland is in a difficult situation, and there’s really no telling what they’re going to do next. The good news, however, is that they’ll still have LeBron James on the roster either way. I suppose that’s some solace.
