NBA: 5 hypothetical trades that make sense
By Evan Dyal
Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: Kyle O’Quinn and Courtney Lee
New York Knicks Receive: Gorgui Dieng and a second-round pick
Why It Makes Sense For the Knicks – Getting Gorgui Dieng to replace Kyle O’Quinn is a wash. However, getting rid of Courtney Lee, who is 32, opens up playing time for intriguing second-round rookie Damyean Dotson.
Plus, it will give them another second-round pick; they already have Chicago’s. Now they will have three picks in this year’s draft. This trade makes them worse this season, which is good because it puts them in line for a better pick.
Why It Makes Sense for the Timberwolves – This is a franchise that hasn’t made the playoffs in 14 years. They should make it this year, but there are severe holes on the roster. Mainly, the bench and defense. Adding O’Quinn and Lee solve these problems. Notably, Lee gives the Wolves another shooter and a wing defender.
Lee is shooting 40-plus percent from deep and is a plus defender. He would allow the Wolves to play more small ball lineups as well and not play Shabazz Muhammad, which helps.
