NBA: 5 hypothetical trades that make sense
By Evan Dyal
Atlanta Hawks Receive: Kenneth Faried, Emmanuel Mudiay, a second-round pick from Portland or Sacramento (less favorable)
Denver Nuggets Receive: Dennis Schroder
Why it Makes Sense for the Hawks – Atlanta plays as hard as anyone and are very well coached, but they still stink. They are already 2-9, and it won’t get better this year. The only asset they have is Dennis Schroder.
Schroeder has become a solid player and is having a good year, but he’s also their only chance to get young assets and picks. Atlanta has needs across the board. With this trade, they get a young point guard in Mudiay, who is looking better this year and Faried who is playing well but is struggling for minutes in Denver’s crowded frontcourt.
Sure it would make Atlanta’s frontcourt also a little crowded, but guys like Ersan Ilyasova, Mike Muscala, and Miles Plumlee, probably won’t be their next year. An extra second-round pick gives Atlanta three picks in this year’s draft so that they can reload on young talent.
Why it Makes Sense for the Nuggets- Denver is trying to win now, or at least make the playoffs. There have been some struggles this year, especially at point guard, even though they have improved recently. Schroder would be an upgrade as he is averaging 22.7 points this season. The move would bring Jamal Murray off the bench, where he could be a scorer. Also, these two could play together at times. The trade is a small price to pay for an excellent young point guard.
