NBA: 5 players that desperately need a fresh start
By Morgan Dunn
John Henson
It’s possible that Henson may finally find a significant role in Milwaukee now that the Bucks have traded center Greg Monroe, but after five years with the team it seems unlikely. Milwaukee made Henson the 14th selection of the 2012 NBA Draft, hoping to tap into his vast upside. Henson was a big-time prospect when he arrived at the University of North Carolina, though he was painfully thin. Still, he was skilled and exceptionally long, appearing to have a promising future as a shot-blocking menace on the pro level.
Henson struggled to add muscle during his three years at UNC, something that has continued to plague him in the NBA. Now 26 years old, Henson is still listed at 6-foot-11, 229. To give you some perspective, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is listed at 6-foot-4, 225.
While Henson is never going to be a bruiser inside, his length makes him a very good rim protector. He has a sneaky-good offensive game as well, but he’s never been able to find reliable playing time in Milwaukee.
A change of scenery would do Henson some good, as he still has the potential to be a better version of fellow UNC alum Brandan Wright. Henson’s contract isn’t doing him any favors as far as attracting trade interest, but one thing he does have going for him is that his annual salary actually decreases over the next two seasons. Still, another team will have to believe in the UNC product quite a bit to pull the trigger on a trade. Dallas is a team in need of talent and could be interested in Henson’s services.
