NBA: 10 takeaways from the first quarter of the 2017-18 season

Detroit is for real (?)
Detroit may be the surprise of the season. Before the season, I’m not sure if many NBA pundits had them finishing above .500. They’re 11-6 and indeed have the look of a playoff team.
One of the biggest reasons for Detroit’s resurgence has been Tobias Harris, who is shooting a career-best 47 percent from deep and 90 percent from the charity stripe. Detroit is top 10 in the NBA in 3-point shooting. Another welcome sight is Reggie Jackson, who looks spry again. Avery Bradley fits seamlessly and Stanley Johnson has shown signs of life.
The Pistons have done an excellent job cleaning the glass, not fouling and, like Boston, taking away attempts at the rim. The one concern is they are giving up too many corner 3’s per game. Detroit is fourth in point differential in the East; the Pistons are back, and teams won’t want to face them in the playoffs.
