The Chicago Bulls dropped the ball by trading Jordan Bell away on NBA Draft night, and he’s clearly the type of player that they need

The Chicago Bulls’ biggest mistake of the 2017 summer occurred on NBA Draft night, and no it wasn’t trading Jimmy Butler.

Instead, the biggest mistake that Chicago made was trading the rights of Jordan Bell to the Golden State Warriors. Could they right a wrong by trading back for him? Would the Warriors even be interested in such a move?

It’s a topic and idea that will likely never be considered by the Bulls or the Warriors, but it’s certainly something Chicago should bring up.

Essentially, the Bulls traded Bell in exchange for $3.5 million, a number that had been unheard of in any past NBA Draft cash transactions.

What hurts the most is that Bell would’ve been a perfect fit on the rebuilding Bulls. Instead, they preferred the extra $3.5 million to help them buyout Dwyane Wade. In fairness, no one could’ve really seen how good Bell would be this fast, but alas.

Bell is only averaging 4.3 points per game on 11 minutes per contest, but is shooting an outrageous 74 percent from the field. In small sample sizes, he’s looked good. In 16 minutes played against the Orlando Magic earlier this month, Bell finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three blocks on 8-10 shooting. In 26 minutes played against the Portland Trail Blazers Monday, Bell finished with 11 points, six rebounds and two assists on 5-6 shooting.

If the Warriors were willing to listen, the Bulls could offer Bobby Portis, who would actually be quite useful for Golden State. Portis is a talented stretch-4 with a ton of potential. Perhaps Denzel Valentine is another contract that the Bulls could offer up.

Ironically, Jordan Bell is everything that the Chicago Bulls need and could’ve used this season. He’s also a young talent that would’ve meshed perfectly with the team’s young core.

Unfortunately, it might be too late to recover from this NBA Draft night mistake but there’s no question that Jordan Bell would’ve excelled this season in Chicago. The good news for the Bulls is that they’ll likely end up with a top 3 pick in the top heavy 2018 NBA Draft. They might not ever fully escape the ridicule that they will receive every time Bell has a good stretch or good game, but they could certainly begin to put it behind them by hitting a home run next June.
