The Cleveland Cavaliers have assigned Isaiah Thomas to the G Leauge team, which indicates he’s inching closer to a return

All the Cleveland Cavaliers needed to do for the first half of the 2017-18 NBA season is survive without Isaiah Thomas, the man who was supposed to replace Kyrie Irving.

After a rough start to the season, which was natural considering all the new faces in the Cavaliers lineup, Cleveland managed to climb all the way back up the Eastern Conference standings. Cleveland now stands just one game back in the loss column behind both the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors.

That’s huge, considering that we haven’t even seen the best of the Cavs.

And that “best” version of the Cavs could be closer than we all realize. According to Yahoo, Isaiah Thomas is reportedly taking the next step in his return. Thomas has been assigned to the team’s G League team in Canton in an attempt to prep him for his eventual return.

"[via Yahoo]Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas has taken another step in his comeback and was assigned to the team’s G League affiliate in Canton on Thursday, league sources told Yahoo Sports."

This is the natural next step for Thomas, who is likely still a couple weeks from making his debut for the Cavs. When Thomas returns, Cleveland wants to avoid any setbacks. Which is probably the biggest reason why Thomas hasn’t return in the past week, or won’t be active for the team’s big Christmas clash against the Golden State Warriors.

There’s no question that Thomas is inching to return. After all, he likely still has a sour taste in his mouth after being dealt from the Celtics. And in seeing that Boston is the top seed in the East, it only naturally adds fuel to the fire.

Thomas injured his hip last season with the Celtics, and missed the team’s last few games in the playoffs. He’s been recovering all offseason, and could be a reason why the Celtics traded him – whether they’re willing to admit it or not.
