Dallas Mavericks: A Good Draft Pick

I’m pretty sure Mark Cuban and the Mavs are going to hope Christmas comes later (earlier?) than May, but they may have to wait until then.

The Mavericks are currently 15th in the Western Conference with an 8-23 record. Rick Carlisle’s squad is also 27th in scoring, but ironically 10th in opponent points per game. While you can never attribute a team’s struggles to one or two players, I will point out the following:

  • Nerlens Noel is out of the rotation
  • DSJ is in a bit of a slump
  • The Mavs’ fourth leading scorer is J.J. Barea at 12.1 PPG, and their 5th is Dirk… playing 25.1 MPG

Similar to the Hawks, the Mavericks weren’t expected to be in the conversation for contender status, they certainly were expected to be a little better with a new young trio of Nerlens Noel, Harrison Barnes, and Dennis Smith Jr. Unfortunately, that really hasn’t worked out, and the Mavericks are really struggling to score. It certainly doesn’t help that one of their leading scorers from last season in Seth Curry has been out since October and, according to basketballreference.com, is still without a timetable for his return.

Barring a 2016-17 Miami Heat second half of the season, the Mavericks are going to hope the lottery balls drop in their favor.
