After a hot start to the season, the Detroit Pistons will have to survive without Reggie Jackson in the lineup for two months

Through the first few weeks of the 2017-18 NBA season, the Detroit Pistons had been one of the best feel good stories of year.

The Pistons are currently 19-14, 4th in the Eastern Conference standings, and had shown no signs of really slowing down. However, that could now change.

According to Yahoo’s Shams Charania, Reggie Jackson, the team’s starting point guard, has been diagnosed with a Grade 3 right ankle sprain. He is expected to miss roughly two months of the season.

After somewhat of a down season last year, Jackson was having a solid season thus far. Averaging 14.6 points, 5.5 assists and nearly three rebounds per game on a career-high 45 percent shooting from the field and 34 percent from 3-point range, Jackson was leading the Pistons to a breakout season.

Losing Jackson will certainly hurt the Pistons moving forward. Not only was he the team’s third-leading scorer, but also the team’s primary and leading assist man.

Ish Smith isn’t a terrible backup point guard to have for this very situation, but there’s no question that Jackson’s presence will certainly be missed. If nothing else, the team’s backcourt depth will definitely be tested now.

If Jackson returns, say, after the NBA All-Star break, he would miss 23 games for the Pistons. That’s nearly one-fourth of the entire NBA season. Not great, especially for a team that was in the running to finish as a top 4 team in the East.

By no means will the Pistons fall so far in the East standings that they won’t be a playoff team, but it’s going to be interesting to see what type of impact this injury has on this team moving forward.

The addition of Avery Bradley in the offseason certainly will help cushion the blow, but any team losing a starting point guard will have an effect. We just don’t now how great it will be.
