NBA: Biggest surprises and disappointments of the 2017-18 season thus far
New York Knicks
The New York Knicks have been one of the biggest surprises of the early NBA season. Fueled by Kristaps Porzingis, the Knicks have not only been exciting but they are actually in the playoff hunt. They are currently one game back of the 8th seed, at 18-19. The story of the Knicks season has been the breakout of Kristaps Porzingis, who has solidified his status as the building block of the next great Knicks team.

The supporting cast has also been surprisingly good. One player in particular that has stood out has been Frank Ntilikina, the 8th overall pick in the 2017 draft. He is still raw and has yet to show the ability to consistently impact the game on offense but he has shows flashes of what he could be, especially on the defensive end. He has been terrific defensively, especially when considering he is just 19. With his physical tools he has the ability to be one of the league’s premier defensive guards.
With Porzingis and Ntilikina, the Knick have two solid young pieces that they can hopefully continue to build around. If the start to this season is any indication, the Knicks might have finally found some direction.
What to Watch For:
The Knicks have already played 22 home games, in which they have gone 15-7. In the 15 games they have played on the road, however, they are only 3-12. The schedule has clearly done them some favors early on but it will eventually even out.

With their schedule set to balance out, it will be interesting to see how the young team handles this upcoming stretch. In January they will play only three games at MSG. Their performance over this time will likely determine if the Knicks will be a real playoff contender or lottery-bound.
