NBA Rumors: Because of his injury, Isaiah Thomas might not receive many huge offers in free agency next summer

Isaiah Thomas will hit the unrestricted free agent market July 1. And his recent injury woes, which forced him to miss the end of the last season and the first half of this season, could make his situation murky.

Last season, before his injury, Thomas was at the top of his game and was expected to cash in on a max offer once he hit the free agent market. Then, he suffered a significant hip injury that forced him to miss the team’s last couple playoff games.

During the summer, with Thomas still recovering, the Boston Celtics elected to trade him to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Kyrie Irving. Now, Thomas, who was once eyeing a huge payday, his first big opportunity on the open market of his young career, might find his suitors difficult to come by.

And according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, his best chance at cashing in big this summer will probably be with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"[via ESPN]Thomas is in a contract year and he wants to be paid. League executives and agents judging the market believe Thomas’ best chance at a significant contract this summer is with the Cavs and they believe he will proceed accordingly."

There were bound to be questions on whether to give Isaiah Thomas big money even before his hip injury last season. Now, those concerns will only grow louder. But there is no team that is going to have more inside information on Thomas than the Cavs.

So even if LeBron James decides to leave Cleveland, perhaps signing Thomas to a big deal could help the Cavs as a gap fix.

Thomas isn’t the centerpiece of any franchise, not in today’s NBA, but he’s the type of player that can help sustain a franchise – if that makes any sense. Just look at the job he did with the Boston Celtics before they landed any of their big names.

Thomas almost singlehandedly kept the Celtics relevant. That shouldn’t be overlooked.
