The Trade (Explained)

Now before I go any further, I know that Michael Jordan has come out publicly since the Kemba trade rumors started to float around, and he essentially shut down the rumors. So why am I writing a piece on a trade that’s likely to not happen?

More from Sir Charles In Charge

Well, for Charlotte, they are headed towards a painful rebuild, and while losing Kemba would hurt, they also know they won’t be competing for a title anytime soon. They also have a host of contracts no one is vying for.

While I’m sure they’d rather move Kemba and one of MKG+Williams+Batum+Howard, acquiring the most recent No. 1 overall pick (although he’s injured) and a promising young point forward in Saric would do wonders for their long term potential. Johnson is on an expiring deal, so they’ll get some salary cap relief this offseason.

For a small-market team like Charlotte, (although, I really don’t understand why we still classify them as such since their majority owner is MICHAEL FREAKING JORDAN) having as much cap space as possible is never a bad thing – whether they’re competing for a postseason berth or rebuilding.

Unfortunately, the franchise is about to be in the latter stage, but Michael Jordan is a businessman and whether he likes it or not, deep down he knows that the team he owns is about to be owned by a lot of teams in the coming years – it’s better to prepare as best you can, while you can.
