NBA: 5 rookies who are starting to figure it out
By Evan Dyal
Bogdan Bogdanovic, Sacramento Kings
I know we have to talk about a Kings player. The Kings are not fun, but Bogdan is fun. He is also good! He is averaging 11.2 points, 2.9 assists, 2.7 rebound per game on 47 percent shooting from the field, 39 percent from three, and 82 percent from the line. Bogdan is getting better quickly too.
In January, he is averaging 13.6 points, 3.8 assists, 3.3 rebounds per game on 48 percent shooting. Bogdanovich has been efficient with a 58 percent true shooting percentage and his passing has been impressive with a 20.5 assist ratio.
He is already above average in every facet of the offense. Bogdan is at his best in spot-ups
and transition. He’s got the 3 ball and is deceptively quick. That is why he ranks in the 93rd percentile in transition with a 57 percent score frequency. He may be the Kings best offensive player, which is impressive and sad.
Bogdanovich is fifth in offensive rating, third in assist percentage, first in effective field goal percentage, 2nd in true shooting percentage. What’s most impressive is he has a low usage rating. That is why his points per shot attempt are 119.6, and that is one of the best marks among all shooting guards. His assist percentage is one of the best marks in the league for his position as well.
The problem is he turns the ball over a lot. All rookies do, and his teammates are terrible, he gets a pass. He makes up for it, by shooting efficiently at the rim, in the midrange and from 3.
Bogdanovich gets the ball at the top right of the key. Isolates himself on Rubio and then hits with a crossover and two hard dribbles to his right. He then stops on a dime and nails the jumper while being fouled. This guy has serious skills and can be a deadly scorer in this league.
Defense is not as good. He ranks in the 28th percentile overall on defense. His weakest area is defending off-screen action. He ranks in the 22nd percentile in that department. This will take time and adding strength is a must as well. His best asset is generating steals at an above average rate.
While the defense is concerning, the offense is so good; it makes up for it. In two to three years he can average 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game. Yea I said it. Of course, the Kings may do something to mess it up.
