NBA Rumors: The San Antonio Spurs and Kawhi Leonard have issues to work out before any possible extension this offseason

What started as a serious, but innocent injury, has turned into a franchise-changing moment for the San Antonio Spurs.

Kawhi Leonard only played in nine games this season, and it’s no certainty that he’ll ever put on the Silver and Black again. Kawhi is reportedly at odds with San Antonio Spurs management, and there’s a wedge between the relationship.

No one really knows how bad it is, but the Spurs are intent on finding out soon. The Spurs, led by Gregg Popovich, and Kawhi are expected to have a meeting to discuss the recent issues. And, more importantly, to see if things are fixable.

"[via ESPN]The San Antonio Spurs hope to have an “all-hands-on-deck” meeting with Kawhi Leonard this offseason, according to sources. The Spurs plan on meeting with Leonard to gauge whether they two sides can continue their partnership. Gregg Popovich is expected to take the lead.…“The relationship between Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs is broken and it’s got to be put back together again before the Spurs make that kind of commitment to a player,” said Wojnarowski."

Kawhi is eligible for a super max extension this summer, but the Spurs aren’t likely to offer him the big money if there’s any sort of disconnect. That simply can’t happen, and a well-run organization like the Spurs wouldn’t do that type of rash move.

But getting to the bottom of this issue won’t be easy, especially if Kawhi and the Spurs camp isn’t the only two voices in the room. It was reported earlier this year that one of the biggest issues between Kawhi and the Spurs fell on the former’s lap.

Kawhi’s camp has some issues with how the Spurs handled his rehab process, and it’s clear that they might be driving this most recent narrative.

If the Spurs and Kawhi can’t come to understanding, it’ll be interesting to see what San Antonio elects to do instead. That’s when a possible trade comes into the picture. But before that doomsday scenario for San Antonio, there’s no question that there’s several stops. Hopefully one leads back on track.
