What happened the last time the Houston Rockets met the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Playoffs?

The Houston Rockets are facing the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Playoffs for the third time in four years. Also, the Warriors and Rockets are facing each other for the third time ever.

That’s right, back in 2015, Houston and Golden State saw each other. Then, they had a rematch the following year. They took off in 2017, and are now back at it again.

The teams have played 10 playoff games over that stretch. The Warriors have won eight of them. In those eight wins, four of them were by more than 25 points. The Warriors have been a nightmare for Houston, (and the rest of the league, of course) for a while.

Both series meetings ended with Golden State winning in five games. In 2015, Houston avoided a sweep winning game four. Houston won Game 3 in 2016.

In 2015, they actually met in the conference finals. In 2016, they met in the first round. This is interesting because, something went wrong for the Rockets in 2016. In 2015, they were the 2nd seed. Next season, they were 8th. The Warriors were always the top seed.

This year is different, of course.

Here’s a list of interesting facts and stats from those two years:

  • In 2015, Clint Capela played in all five games, but only a total of 36 minutes. My guess is he’d see that in one game these days. Things change.
  • In 2015, Dwight Howard averaged 14.4 points AND rebounds. Yes, same number for both stats.
  • Steph Curry missed most of 2016’s meeting as he was dealing with what is now becoming an annual tradition: Injury. Injured for the first round. He played for two games but only for 38 minutes.
  • Currently, the teams are on an interesting pattern of wins. Warriors win three in a row, Rockets win a game. Warriors win three, Rockets win one. Currently, the Warriors have won two in a row. Could the first game of 2018 keep that pattern alive?
  • The teams have met on two Thursdays. Why do you care? Both of those games were decided by one point. Rockets loss in 2015 and Warriors loss in 2016. Scores were close, too. 99-98 in ’15 and 97-96 in ’16. I have time on my hands.
  • Continuing the days trend, Houston may want to figure something out about the weekend. They’ve played two Saturdays and one Sunday. Each of those games ended with Houston getting blown out by at least 26 points.

So, can the Houston Rockets turn things around this year? It remains to be seen.
