NBA Rumors: Mike Budenholzer quietly went from one of the NBA’s biggest tanking machines to the one of the NBA’s best young cores this offseason

There is still plenty that will play out for the rest of this offseason, but the early leader in the clubhouse for the best summer move is Mike Budenholzer.

Budenholzer, one of the NBA’s better coaches, quietly jumped from the Atlanta Hawks, who finished with the league’s fourth-worst record, to the Milwaukee Bucks, one of the NBA’s best young cores.

And I can’t really hate on Budenholzer who might’ve quit on the Hawks. In fact, I’m actually surprised this doesn’t happen more often in the NBA. It happens all the time in college basketball, and the last time it happened in the NBA was when Doc Rivers made the move from the rebuilding Boston Celtics to the new-and-improved LA Clippers.

But, that was almost five years ago.

Now, though, Budenholzer gets to coach up perhaps the most untapped potential in the league. We know how good Giannis Antetokounmpo can be on his best day, but for the most part the majority of the Bucks’ talent hasn’t reached its peak.

Milwaukee was arguably the best job available on the open market – depending on what you think of its roster, and of the New York Knicks. And, for the most part, Budenholzer, even if it came about somewhat surprisingly, was the best coach available. It was a match made in NBA heaven.

The Milwaukee Bucks are going to be one of the most intriguing teams in the NBA next season. When he has talent, Budenholzer has a track record of success – even if it is just in the regular season. And it should be noted that the best player Budenholzer has ever coached was Paul Millsap or Al Horford – pick who you’d prefer.
