NBA Rumors: The Phoenix Suns landed the first overall pick in the NBA Draft for the first time in franchise history, but could they use it land a bigger fish?
The Phoenix Suns are sitting in prime position as the 2018 NBA Draft draws near. They hold the No. 1 pick and will have their selection of any of the top prospects in what appears to be a quite deep draft class.
However, the Suns are reportedly leaving all their options open weeks ahead of the draft.
Suns GM Ryan McDonough notes that the team is “open” to the idea of moving back in the draft. In other words, the top overall pick could be open for business, if the right deal presents itself.
And what makes this all the more interesting is the reports that are surfacing from Minnesota, which suggest that Karl-Anthony Towns could be upset with the Wolves. So much so that it could prompt a potential trade this summer.
How does this all tie into the Suns? Well, it’s quite simple. Devin Booker and KAT were teammates during their lone season at Kentucky.

There certainly would be interest all around the league if Karl-Anthony Towns were to hit the open market, which still feels like the most unlikeliest of outcomes at the moment. Nevertheless, if it is something that happens this summer, the Suns might actually be in prime position to strike a deal with Minnesota.
Phoenix could theoretically offer a package around the top overall pick and potentially one or two of their young pieces for Karl-Anthony Towns, which would recreate the duo of Towns and Devin Booker.
It might a bit costly on the surface, but it would actually expedite Phoenix’s rebuild, which they’ve been trying to do for years.

On the other hand, who knows what such a move would do to the Wolves as a whole internally. Would Jimmy Butler be OK with the team hit the quick reset button to a certain extent? Who knows, but what’s clear is that this is more complicated than what appears on the surface. But, in the end, the Suns and Wolves could emerge as natural trade partners.
