NBA Rumors: Houston Rockets could target Paul George in free agency this summer, if they can’t pry LeBron James away from Cleveland

If the Houston Rockets don’t feel good about their ability to pry LeBron James away from the Cleveland Cavaliers – or another team in the East like the Philadelphia 76ers – there is another high profile free agent that Daryl Morey and company could target.

That player is Paul George, who is expected to be a free agent this summer as well.

If that becomes Plan A for the Rockets, though, they’ll have some stiff competition in the Los Angeles Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder. The Lakers have been long tied to the pursuit of Paul George, and the Thunder will have a step on the competition due to the fact that he just spent the season there.

"[via Rockets Wire]In addition to the Rockets’ longstanding interest in free agent-to-be LeBron James, another noteworthy longtime target of general manager Daryl Morey is Paul George, two league sources told Rockets Wire."

Then Rockets attempted to acquire George during last summer, when he ultimately landed in Oklahoma City. Houston, which fell one game away from the NBA Finals, will have to be decisive in free agency.

If history is any indication, LeBron James won’t make a quick decision. And if he lingers, it could force the onus on George to make a decision. And if he decides to sign in Houston, they must elect to either throw in the towel on their pursuit of LeBron or tell George to wait until LeBron makes a decision.

Of course, this would be the ideal scenario for the Rockets, one that might not even work out in their favor when free agency unfolds. Nevertheless, it’s another thing for the Rockets to hope for.
