NBA Rumors: Gregg Popovich wants in on the LeBron James sweepstakes
NBA Rumors: Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs want in on the LeBron James free agency sweepstakes this summer
A few days ago, just before LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers had been eliminated by the Golden State Warriors for the third time in four seasons, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said there are seven teams in the LeBron James sweepstakes.
Those seven teams are the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
But according to veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein, there is another party that hopes to crash the LeBron James sweepstakes. Gregg Popovich and the San Antonio Spurs hope to get a sit-down with LeBron this summer.

"[via NY Times]I’ve also been advised that the ever-persuasive San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich is bound to try to force his way into the conversation to sell James on the merits of South Texas."
This is an interesting angle, especially since the Spurs are dealing with their own issues at the moment. Kawhi Leonard is reportedly at odds with the team and may or may not want a trade this summer.
However, perhaps this is something that could help sway Kawhi’s feelings. Popovich is expected to have a sit-down meeting with Kawhi at some point this summer – you’d think before free agency – to try and restore the relationship.
And maybe this potential meeting with LeBron is something that Popovich can throw on the table as he attempts to change Kawhi’s heart. It’s bold, and if Kawhi is in that room with Popovich trying to sell LeBron on South Texas it wouldn’t be bad.
