Dallas Mavericks: Would trading for the No. 4 pick + Parsons be worth it?
The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly open to the idea of absorbing Chandler Parsons if it means they could also land the No. 4 overall pick in the NBA Draft
Earlier this week it was reported that the Memphis Grizzlies are gauging the interest of trading a package that included the No. 4 overall pick and Chandler Parsons. It was first reported by The Athletic’s Michael Scotto.
The motivation on the part of the Grizzlies makes sense. They could get out from under the Parsons deal, who is still owed $50 million over the next two seasons, while adding a potential veteran that could help them now rather than a rookie that probably needs 2-3 years of development before being a contributing player.
Memphis’ core doesn’t have the luxury of sitting around and waiting for rookies to grow up. Not to mention that the team’s best player, Marc Gasol, is a free agent after the season. And the Grizzlies simply can’t sell him on this team being ready to compete in three years.

Thus, Memphis is willing, at the very least, to listen to offers.
And one team, according to Dallas Mavericks reporter Mike Fisher, that could be interested in such deal is the Mavs.
"And NBA sources tell me the Mavs are willing to take Parsons back in trade if Memphis is serious about sacrificing pick No. 4 overall in the upcoming NBA Draft.Dallas “would look at taking on money in exchange for a top-10 pick,” one source tells me."
The big problem with a potential deal getting done between the two deals, though, is that the Mavs don’t have a ton to offer. Especially if they’re not willing to include Harrison Barnes in any potential deal – which they probably aren’t.
One player that would theoretically work is Wesley Matthews, though I’m not sure how much interest Dallas would have in him.
If they could find a workable deal, having back-to-back top 5 picks in this top-heavy NBA Draft would be a slam dunk for the Dallas Mavericks.
It would give Dallas so much flexibility moving forward. The Mavericks could play the long game and wait for their young core to develop – which already includes Dennis Smith Jr. – or they could flip a young player or two, along with a future pick, for a star now.

The downside to a potential deal with the Grizzlies is that absorbing Parsons’ deal likely eliminates any chance they have at being players in free agency this summer. But if Dallas feels it’s an equal and worthwhile swap, they should definitely explore this possibility.
