The Big Problem
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure understand that you don’t want to be paying a 38-year-old Chris Paul, no matter what shape he might be in, nearly $50 million per season. That number is absolutely insane. And the big question that the Houston Rockets need to ask themselves is whether they’re willing to trade paying Paul that type of money when he’s 38 for another year or two of contending in the Western Conference.
That’s the trade off here; one or two, or even three if you want me to be Mr. Optimistic, more years of trying to break through the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference for being in salary cap hell in four years. Because that’s going to happen one way or another if they give Paul his max money.
That’s a decision that the Rockets will need to figure out sooner rather than later. And it won’t be an easy one to make.
