Atlanta Hawks: The 2018 NBA offseason summary and recap
Looking back at what the Atlanta Hawks did right and wrong during the 2018 NBA offseason, including the draft and free agency
The Atlanta Hawks had a season to forget in 2017-18, and had a ton of work ahead of them during the summer of 2018. Let’s take a quick look back at what they have accomplished over the busy first few months of the offseason.
Shortly after the season ended, the Atlanta Hawks agreed to part ways with head coach Mike Budenholzer while naming the Lloyd Pierce as the team’s new lead voice just two weeks later. Pierce was hired over from the Philadelphia 76ers, where he was an assistant for Brett Brown.
Then, in the NBA Draft the Hawks did well by getting their guy.

After having been long linked to Trae Young, they got it done on draft night. And after making a trade with the Dallas Mavericks, they were lucky enough to get their guy (Young) and a future asset. It could’ve have gone better in the eyes of the Hawks’ front office.
In addition to Young, the Hawks also drafted Kevin Huerter who is a catch-and-shoot type of player. And in today’s NBA, you can’t really have enough of those types of players. They rounded out their bright night by adding Omari Spellman out of Villanova.
The Hawks may not have gotten the biggest name on draft night, but they got a few pieces that they believe will pay dividends down the line.
To round out the offseason, the Hawks added Jeremy Lin, Carmelo Anthony, Justin Anderson and a future first-round pick via trades in order to help facilitate the buying out of Melo.
The team dipped their toes in the free agency frenzy by signing Vince Carter in an attempt to add a veteran presence to the locker room.
All in all, the Atlanta Hawks didn’t have a crazy offseason but they did add some solid pieces in hopes they can develop into the core of a good team down the line. Atlanta will likely have another trying season this year, but hope is on the horizon.
