Looking back at what the Cleveland Cavaliers did right and wrong during the 2018 NBA offseason, including the draft and free agency
The Cleveland Cavaliers were at the center of the NBA universe this past summer, with all the attention revolving around LeBron James and his impending free agency.
As we now know, it resulted in LeBron heading to LA and the Cavs stuck picking up the pieces. It was a huge summer for Cleveland and even though they didn’t exactly come away with re-signing LeBron, they did begin to set the table for the future.
Let’s take a look back at their up and down summer.
More from Sir Charles In Charge
- LeBron James working to assemble super team for USA Basketball in 2024
- Dillon Brooks proved his value to Houston Rockets in the 2023 FIBA World Cup
- NBA Trade Rumors: 1 Player from each team most likely to be traded in-season
- Golden State Warriors: Buy or sell Chris Paul being a day 1 starter
- Does Christian Wood make the Los Angeles Lakers a legit contender?
The Cavs opened the summer by shopping a few of their players and their top 10 pick, trying to hit on a superstar to try and get LeBron to re-sign, but couldn’t find any takers so settled by selecting Collin Sexton with the 8th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.
Shortly after the draft, the team lost LeBron James in free agency and were left to try to recover. Rodney Hood is still a restricted free agent and has held talks with the Cavs, but the two sides still haven’t struck a deal.
After losing LeBron, it’s important that the Cavs do whatever they can to retain a player like Hood. Even though he pretty much fell out of the rotation during the playoffs, Hood is a talented young player that could grow alongside the team’s young prospects.
In the last few weeks, the team also signed Kevin Love to an extension. And this pretty much came out of left field. Could they trade Love? Will he be a key building block to the next phase in Cleveland Cavaliers basketball?
If nothing else, it gives the franchise options. And that’s that they haven’t had without LeBron James on the roster in a long time.
