What’s next for the Spurs?

With most of the attention squared on Kawhi Leonard, there are still some big questions that are yet to be answered in San Antonio. Even though they, considering circumstances, got a great return in exchange for Kawhi, we still don’t know where this team is going.

Are they just going to pivot with DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge until Gregg Popovich retires? Why didn’t Pop just look for the best deal, featuring draft picks and young prospects, to leave the team in good hands when he retires?

Then again, the emergence of Golden State Warriors has made franchise’s often make not so smart decisions. Could the Spurs be falling right into this mold too?

San Antonio will likely be formidable next season, there’s no question about that. But they’re further away from contending then they were before they traded Kawhi Leonard. And taking a step or two back, just to win the PR game doesn’t seem like a Spurs type of move.
