With the way the books are setup, there’s a very real chance that the Dallas Mavericks will be a prime destination spot next summer

It’s been a while since the Dallas Mavericks have been big players in NBA Free Agency. And, no, I’m not talking about chasing after DeAndre Jordan or Hassan Whiteside. I’m talking about being big – and real – players when it comes to the big names.

However, that could soon change. After this season, the Mavericks could possibly have $66 million coming off the books, depending on what Harrison Barnes and Dwight Powell elect to do with their player options.

But if they both elect to chase bigger, or longer, contracts on the open market, it could open the door for Mark Cuban to go whale hunting again.

And with two interesting young prospects like Dennis Smith Jr. and Luka Doncic under contract for the foreseeable future, it could make the Mavs a team to watch for in free agency next summer.

Depending on how this season unwinds for the Mavs, they could be back in contender status with one big signing during the summer. Perhaps not on the same level as, say, the Golden State Warriors or Houston Rockets but closer to the pack than they’ve been over the last few seasons.

The big wildcard, of course, is Dirk Nowitzki. Even though he is no longer a player that you can build around, he’s still a good piece that can help a team both on and off the floor. He will help mature these young pieces, and could potentially play a role in recruitment next summer.

Taking pay cut after pay cut over the last few seasons, next summer could be the year where he finally gets to play with some big names – if he wants to play another season.

The Dallas Mavericks may not win much this season, and most of their focus should be on developing the likes of Dennis Smith Jr. and Luka Doncic, but this team’s fortunes could change quickly. Possibly in the matter of one summer.
