NBA Rumors: Karl-Anthony Towns is reportedly waiting to see what the franchise does with Jimmy Butler to sign his long-term contract extension
The Minnesota Timberwolves have a bit of a problem on their hands and, if they don’t navigate through it carefully, one misstep could send the franchise back years.
Jimmy Butler is supposed to meet with franchise brass this week, if it hasn’t already happened. He needs to figure out what he wants to do moving forward, and whether he sees himself long-term with the franchise.
On top of that, Karl-Anthony Towns still hasn’t signed his extension that he’s eligible for this summer. The deadline on that is still a ways away – October 15 – but it’s getting closer and closer. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, though, Towns doesn’t plan on signing the long-term extension until the franchise figures out what the resolution will be with Jimmy Butler.

"[via The Athletic]Karl-Anthony Towns, who’s one of the top talents in the league, has yet to sign to sign his rookie max extension, which should be a no-brainer. And I’m told there won’t be any decision on that until this Jimmy Butler situation resolves itself."
This is interesting, to say the least. There are number of things that run through my head when reading this specific report.
For one, I’m not sure if this is a good or bad thing for Towns’ – and Butler’s – future in Minnesota. It could mean that he wants to play with Jimmy B, or it could mean that perhaps he informed management that it’s either him or Jimmy moving forward. The two reportedly don’t have the best of relationships.
If the latter is the case, that means we could see a Jimmy B trade sooner rather than later. Especially if the team wants to make sure they lock up their young sensation.
Tom Thibodeau is not in a great situation, and it’s possibly blowing all up in his face. I suppose the good thing is that at least Luol Deng is back.
