The Chicago Bulls have quite an interesting roster, which suggests that this season could be a disaster. Is it so crazy that it just might all work, though?

I don’t think that anyone would argue that the Chicago Bulls‘ roster is ideal. It’s pretty much a makeshift of talented, but not the best fitting players.

But the key to their season could be the first part of that sentence, though. There is certainly talent. Looking at the roster on paper, you could argue that it’s one of the most talented young teams in the NBA.

Starting with their $20 million man, Zach LaVine. He’s not only as athletic as they come, but he’s also shown flashes as an overall offensive player – enough to warrant the Bulls giving him that huge contract.

But LaVine isn’t the most head-scratching decision of this roster. Kris Dunn leaves plenty to be desired as a point guard, but he’s still quite young and has the talent to transition into a solid starting lead guard for the Bulls. Will that come this season? It’s hard to say, but the fact that Chicago was somewhat disappointed in how he approached the summer isn’t a great start.

The frontcourt is where it really gets interesting for Chicago. Their projected starting small forward could be Jabari Parker, their new free agent acquisition. Even though you can’t really critique the contract that the Bulls signed him to – which is essentially a one-year, $20 million deal – you can question the fit.

Parker hasn’t really shown he can play the 3 in the NBA, and struggles mightily on the defensive end with his lack of lateral quickness. But his talent could surpass the strange fit in the end, and could be one of the best kept secrets in the Eastern Conference. He’s battled a handful of injuries through his young career, but when he’s healthy he’s been productive.

Where there really should be excitement for Bulls fans is the 4 and 5 position, which will eventually be filled by Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr. The sky is the limit for both of these young players, and the former already showed flashes of greatness during his rookie season.

Carter could end up being the steal of the draft, and was somewhat overshadowed by Marvin Bagley, who was the second overall player taken this past draft.

The (eventual) starting 5 may not be the perfect fit for each other in the short run, but just being different – and talented different – could be the key to breaking out in the Eastern Conference. Why not? What’s the worse that can happen?
