NBA: 7 random thoughts heading into the 2018-19 season
Tom Thibodeau is taking a stand against player power
You can argue when it actually began, but there’s no question that we’re currently operating under the player power era in the NBA. The players control everything, and it’s the biggest reason why we’re seeing super team after super team.
If a player is mad and wants out of his current situation, all he has to do, assuming he’s a star, is request his trade. In just the last year, or so, we’ve seen Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard and now (probably) Jimmy Butler too. Who will be next? Because odds are that we’ll likely see another star on the move by the end of the season.
As great as it has been for the players, though, the coaches and general managers can’t love this recent movement. But there really hasn’t been any of them that have successfully fought back. And that’s where Tom Thibodeau comes in. After Jimmy B requested a trade, the Wolves – specifically Thibs – haven’t exactly worked all that hard to find one, and that’s why he’s likely to start the season in Minnesota.
Make no mistake, Thibs is trying to fight back. Can he win, though? It’s going to be interesting to find out.
