Golden State Warriors: Kevin Durant is hurting Steph Curry’s greatness

The Golden State Warriors have the NBA’s most dynamic duo, but is Kevin Durant hurting Stephen Curry’s greatness and legacy?

Wednesday night, Stephen Curry put on a display for the ages by scoring 51 points in three quarters against the Washington Wizards.

In the game, Curry dropped long distance 3-point bombs like he was playing against a bunch of third graders. I mean, he was on fire and treating the Wizards like an elementary school team.

Curry showed why he is a two-time NBA MVP and the only unanimous MVP, but more importantly he showed why the Golden State Warriors is his team. I know the media likes to say that Kevin Durant is the best player on the Warriors, but unlike Durant, Curry actually built a championship franchise.

Curry and the Warriors had won a championship before Durant joined the team. I mean the Warriors were 73-9 before Durant waved the white flag and joined the team he could not beat.

Curry was quickly becoming the face of the NBA. He was (and still is) the player the kids imitated on the playground, in high school, in college and during AAU games. He was the guy that made 3-point shooting cool and the new home run of basketball. He is the reason why many college basketball players shoot buzzer beating three pointers despite being down by only one point.

With all that said, no wonder why Curry has the best-selling jersey in the NBA. He is a rock star just like LeBron James and KD. On Wednesday, he did something that few NBA players could do. He hit 11 out of 16 3-pointers. Some of the 3’s he launched from 30 feet away. Curry even hit a couple of 3-pointers where he fell down or barely saw the rim. No wonder the crowd was chanting MVP, MVP.

Curry’s performance reminded us what he was like before KD. I mean Steph is still great, but he was legendary before KD arrived. It seemed like he put on these shooting displays night-after-night. He constantly was the SportsCenter lead story. We tuned into SportsCenter just to see what team he lit up and what player he had embarrassed.

Now with Durant on the team, Curry’s greatness seems suppressed. I mean before Durant, the media and mostly everyone I knew ranked Curry as one of the top three players in the NBA. Now I know people ranking James Harden over him.

To be blunt, Durant is likely the reason why Curry did not make first team All-NBA two seasons ago. He is likely the reason why Curry has not won a Finals MVP or a third MVP.

On one hand, Durant is helping Curry, but on the other hand he is hurting his legacy. Like I said, Steph was a two-time MVP before Durant arrived. Making second or third team All NBA is great for most players in the league, but Curry is better than that. He is a transcending player and a one of the greats. He needs Durant to get out of his way.
