Despite playing in a new uniform, San Antonio Spurs star DeMar DeRozan is quietly on pace to have another All-NBA season

Many in the media will talk and write about Klay Thompson knocking down 14 3-pointers against the Chicago Bulls last night. Many in the media will talk and write about the Golden State Warriors being unbeatable this year with three guys that can go off for 50 points on any given night.

Many in the media will also write and talk about the Los Angeles Lakers losing another game last night. Hopefully, more media members will start paying more attention to the San Antonio Spurs DeMar DeRozan who is averaging 27.2 points, 7.8 assists and six rebounds a game.

DeRozan is having an NBA MVP type season of his own. I know Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard and Blake Griffin are at the top of most people MVP list, but we cannot ignore DeRozan dominating in the Western Conference.

More from Sir Charles In Charge

A few nights ago against the Lakers, DeRozan clinched the game by hitting a tough 12-footer to put the Spurs up by three with 15.9 seconds remaining. Last night against the Dallas Mavericks, DeRozan drove to the basket and hit a key lay-up with 1:13 remaining to bring the Spurs within one.

On the Spurs next possession, he hit two clutch free throws to give the Spurs a one-point lead with 39.1 seconds remaining, but a bad foul by DeRozan helped the Mavericks send the game into overtime.

In overtime, DeRozan drove to the basket and hit a key lay-up off the glass to give the Spurs a 107-106 lead with 45.3 seconds remaining. Moments later, DeRozan hit a tough step back 18-foot jumper to give the Spurs a 111-106 lead with 10.9 seconds remaining to clinch the game.

DeRozan finished the game with 34 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists with only two turnovers to lead the Spurs to victory.

San Antonio may not be getting the headlines that they have in the past, and they might not have the sexiest of names on their roster, but it would be a mistake to continue to overlook this team’s talent.
