The Athletic’s Shams Charania was the first to report the deal,

Butler requested a trade from the Wolves September 19, and originally had a list of three teams that he preferred to be dealt to. That list included the Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers.
It was later reported that multiple other teams were inquiring about the all-star shooting guard. Jimmy Butler, after being traded from the Chicago Bulls to the Wolves last year’s draft night, is coming off one of his most productive seasons. Butler averaged 22 points, five rebounds and five assists on 47 percent shooting from the field (career high) and 35 percent from 3-point range.
The Sixers were quiet on the Jimmy Butler over the first few weeks of the reported details. Although, it was always thought that they could creep back into talks, considering they had the ammunition and assets to get a deal done.
After a pedestrian start to the season, it appears that they decided enough was enough and finally landed the veteran star that this team chased during this past offseason. In the end, they fell empty-handed, but the acquisition of Butler will surely change their ceiling.
Butler, who joins Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons in Philly, could help this team make a significant jump in the Eastern Conference. As it stands today, the Sixers are currently 8-5, sitting in the third seed of the East.
Now, you can make the argument that this is the best, or even second-best, team in the conference. The top of the Eastern Conference just got better. And the hierarchy might have just shifted.
