NBA Rumors: Due to a disconnect with Sacramento Kings ownership, Dave Joerger appears to be on the hot seat
A month into the 2018-19 NBA season, the Sacramento Kings are sitting at 8-8, just one game back (in the loss column) of being in the top 8 of the Western Conference. It’s safe to say that they’ve looked promising so far this season, and it’s been a success.
Although, as almost is always the case with the Kings, there’s an elephant in the room. And that’s the job security of one Dave Joerger.
And according to a recent report, the disconnect between him and management is much worse than originally thought. So much so that the team could dismiss him of his coaching duties soon.

"[via Yahoo]There appears to be a substantial disconnect between the Sacramento Kings’ front office and head coach Dave Joerger pertaining to the franchise’s priorities and direction, sources told Yahoo Sports. It’s win now vs. development for the future.Joerger’s handling of 2018 No. 2 overall pick Marvin Bagley III could eventually lead to the coach’s dismissal, league sources told Yahoo Sports."
This is a real shame considering that the Kings have gotten off to this good start. They’ve shown signs of potentially blossoming into a really good team over the next few months, behind De’Aaron Fox‘s breakout and Buddy Hield‘s stellar play.
The disconnect essentially lies behind Joerger’s desire to compete for a playoff spot now in using veterans over some of the young, developing prospects. Front office management wants the team to go all-in on the youth movement, even if that means losing a bit more now.
This is not all that surprising. Losing (even though the youth movement) puts Joerger’s job in jeopardy. There isn’t much patience in the NBA for losing, no matter what the overall plan is. Just look at what happened with the Philadelphia 76ers and Sam Hinkie.
The Sixers were eventually successful after his process, but he didn’t even survive long enough to see it. That’s a shame.
Same could be the case for Joerger, or at least that’s his thinking. In the end, management will likely win out here – they usually do. Will it result in the unfortunate firing of Dave Joerger? It’s looking more and more like it.
