LeBron James should be honored in his return tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers

When LeBron James steps onto the floor at Quicken Loans Arena tonight, the reaction should be unanimous. And it should only be cheers.

It was a different time and a different story in 2010, when a in-his-prime 26-year-old LeBron decided to take his talents to Miami in order to win two NBA Championships with two of his best friends. So when he made his return to Cleveland that night, it wasn’t surprising to see and witness the reaction.

After all, he hadn’t won much during his first eight years in Cleveland before heading to Miami. He had taken the Cavs to the NBA Finals, but quickly lost at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs.

It hurt Cleveland to see him in Miami, with two other in-their-prime all-stars. It was an honest and human reaction. That said, that doesn’t mean it was OK. Throwing batteries onto the floor and shouting inappropriate things never is. Booing, however, was not the surprising reaction.

But now, when he returns to Cleveland, everything is different. And so should be the reaction. There should be no boos, no inappropriate shouting matches. There should only be cheers. LeBron should be honored.

He won an NBA Championship for the city of Cleveland and he should be honored for that. He may have left Cleveland but he accomplished everything that he promised he would. He won a chip for the city, and there was nothing more for him to do.

LeBron is now in Los Angeles and is pursuing different goals. Yes, he’s still vying for championships but he’s at a different point in his career where he doesn’t live and die win wins and losses. And that’s OK.
