NBA Trade Rumors: Could the New York Knicks make a run at John Wall?

Since the departure of Carmelo Anthony, the New York Knicks have lacked the star power in order to remain relevant in the NBA. While the emergence of Kristaps Porzingis has been great, his recent injury has really placed a damper on his hype.

However, even with a healthy Kristaps, the team does lack defined star power – especially in today’s game when it’s simply not enough to have just one star.

And that’s why the game of poaching disgruntled stars has taken off over the last few seasons. And the next one that will likely hit the open market could be John Wall, who is currently on the sinking Washington Wizards.

According to one report, the Knicks could be preparing to go all-in on a potential offer for Wall. Question is, is this the star New York needs?

[New York Post]

"Some in the league believe the Knicks are stocking up their young assets and will make a major play for Wall if he becomes available.…It would have to be a three-team deal with the Knicks throwing in Ntilikina, Dotson, Courtney Lee (for cap purposes), a 2020 first-round and second-round pick."

Wall is, no question, when he’s healthy, a great player. However, over the last couple of seasons, as the Wizards continue to fall short of expectations, Wall’s reputation around the league has taken a hit.

Even more so considering that he’s sitting on a super-max extension that will officially go into effect next season. Trading for Wall isn’t just taking a flier on a super talented player on a one or two year deal.

No, taking on Wall is so much more than that which makes it all the more complicated to make the move for the all-star point guard. Whoever trades for him will have to inherit that super-max contract and hope that Wall can live up to his huge contract.

Wall is averaging 21 points, eight assists and four rebounds on 44 percent shooting from the field and just 32 percent from 3-point range. Solid numbers, but if you’re paying someone the super-max, he needs to not only put up great numbers but also elevate your team.

The question that the Knicks need to ask themselves is if John Wall is that guy for them.
