The Cleveland Cavaliers are in the midst of a long rebuild, and it would be wise for contenders to target Tristan Thompson via trade

The former Texas Longhorn, Tristan Thompson, is putting up career-highs in points (12), rebounds (11.6) and offensive rebounds (5).

His effort on both ends of the floor has been exemplary, emerging as a real leader following LeBron James‘ departure. He’s been a bright spot in what’s otherwise been a dismal year for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Given the current status of the Cavs is that of a rebuild, Thompson’s future in Ohio is somewhat uncertain. His excellent play also means that his trade value – despite his rather inflated contract (5-years, $82m back in 2015) – is at an all-time high.

Whether teams are truly willing to take on TT’s contract remains to be seen. The price to put themselves over the top may just be worth it, though.

Although the Canadian big man may be opposed to the idea, Thompson could serve as an excellent energy guy off the bench. The last few years he’s also shown an ability to switch on to guards and more than hold his own, an attractive proposition for potential suitors who may be switch-heavy defensively.

Particularly given the contract, it’s difficult to fathom a team taking on Thompson’s deal at this point in the season.

Nearer the trade deadline, Thompson may become a little more tempting. Teams will be much more aware of their needs as the playoffs beckon, and if rebounding is an issue, Thompson may just be worth the contract if the result is a deep playoff run.

Conversely, Cleveland may want to see what they’ve got when Kevin Love returns. With Matthew Dellavedova back in the mix with the likes of Collin Sexton, Cedi Osman, Alec Burks, and some high draft picks to come, the Cleveland Cavaliers may find themselves with a nice little core.
