With the recent injury to Goran Dragic, the door is open for some mid-season heroics with Dion Waiters on the verge of a return

Two years ago, Dion Waiters helped lead the Miami Heat to an impressive 30-11 run during the second half of the season. Even though the team failed to make the playoffs that season, it was an impressive feat.

With the Heat at 13-16 and out of the top 8 in the Eastern Conference, there’s room for more of that same heroics. And while the Heat do have a crowded backcourt, the recent injury to Goran Dragic (who is expected to miss two months) could open the door for Dion Waiters.

Waiters returned to practice a few days ago and was recently cleared for full contact. That means that his return is imminent, and with the team shutting down Dragic for a good potion of the season it would make sense for it to be soon.

After letting the team down last season, after first declining surgery and then getting it done in the middle of the season, Waiters will have an opportunity to make amends – with management and the fanbase.

Over the last few months, there has been clear frustration with the way Waiters has handled his rehab. But no matter what has been said, there’s no question that the team needs Waiters. If they want to make a run at the playoffs – and if this team isn’t going to blow up the roster, they might as well five that a shot – they’re going to need that same Waiters that helped carry them to a 30-11 record.

The big question is, does he still have that in him? Can he summon it after everything he’s been through over the last few months in rehab? This might be a little dramatic and over the top, but after the start that the Heat has gotten off to, this team might live and die with how Dion Waiters looks when he makes his return.

And if that’s indeed the case, this is will be a scary next few weeks for the Miami Heat.
