If New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis doesn’t value the supermax contract extension that the team can offer him, he’s as good as gone
The New Orleans Pelicans haven’t exactly excelled during Anthony Davis‘ tenure with the team. Sure they’ve made it to the playoffs a few times and have even won a first-round playoff series, but from an overall outside perspective, you can make the case that they’ve been a disappointment overall with AD.
Nevertheless, the fight to keep Davis approaches. A pack of hungry, bigger market franchises are chomping at the bit at a shot at Davis – he has two years remaining on his contract, before he can formally hit the free agency market.
However, it appears teams are already preparing for Davis to hit the trade market, possibly as early as this summer. Even more so if he rejects the supermax offer that the Pelicans can offer him this summer.

And according to a recent report, Davis will not factor the extra dough (that the Pelicans can offer him with the supermax) when deciding his future.
"[via The Athletic]According to a source with knowledge of Davis’ thinking, he does not see the extra $87.3 million that New Orleans is expected to offer in a five-year, $239.5 million supermax extension this summer as a factor in his eventual decision."
If that is indeed the case, and Davis doesn’t really value the extra money as a big part of his upcoming decision, then perhaps the Pelicans have already lost. New Orleans doesn’t exactly have a ton to entice AD, and the supermax is really the only real trick they can pull out of their pockets.
They don’t have a second star that would keep Davis in New Orleans, and have little flexibility in being able to land one. Short of them pulling off a miracle at this year’s NBA Trade Deadline, the roster that they currently have is the one that they’re going to try to sell Davis on.
This story of the summer will revolve around whether Anthony Davis accepts or declines that supermax offer. And, oh boy, if he declines it, it’s going to be a frenzy to get in on the Anthony Davis trade track. Buckle up.
